BRUCE AND BIG WAVE RIDER HAPPY TO SEE THE END OF THE WEST

Media Release No.11

To say solo sailor Bruce Arms is delighted to be past the torrid West Australian coastline would be an understatement of significant proportion. Having experienced treacherous conditions including wind gusts up to 60 knots, massive storms and 12 metre waves, the battered and bruised sailor and his multihull yacht are now passed Kangaroo Island heading towards South East Cape in Tasmania.

“It’s been a daily grind of wind blowing between 20-30 knots and waves constantly breaking over the boat. It’s pretty scary stuff and tough mentally too. There was even a major sea rescue involving another solo sailor this week so it’s not a place for the faint hearted!

“Thankfully the Big Wave Rider is coping well considering the conditions and I am pleased to report that despite the conditions there has been no major damage to the yacht.

“However the lack of sleep is starting to play havoc, it’s really exhausting and to make matters worse one of my key onshore team members Pat Gannon who has been a huge part of this voyage was taken ill this week. Pat is a great mate and a huge loss to my team, I will miss his expert knowledge and wish him a speedy recovery,” Bruce said.

Bruce is expecting South West and South East head winds over the next few days which may slow him down and delay his rounding of Tasmania until mid week.

Bruce expects to arrive home in Mooloolaba by mid August.
