By Barry Tyler Australians will be well aware of the French Fountaine Pajot range of catamarans, seen predominantly in the sailing guise and frequently involved with the charter industry. With the advent of higher fuel costs however there is now also an ever-increasing demand from the private sector, from cruising skippers who are looking for a more economic ‘’powercat’ alternative. The local Australian importer for our region thinks the Fountaine Pajot Highland 35 Pilot will address their requirements admirably. Fountaine Pajot Catamarans (FPC) has for a number of years been marketed in Australia, New Zealand and the Asia Pacific region by Mooloolaba, Queensland based EC Marine. A broad territory certainly, but Australia and New Zealand are where the main emphasis lies. As noted, sailing cats have been their mainstay to date but more and more the demand has centred on the power versions – right across the ‘size’ range. Hence the reason obviously, for the change of direction by EC Marine who is now actively marketing both the power as well as the sailing ranges.
